Convention is to tip on the pre-tax total. The difference is small, and either is accepted.

No extra tip is expected. Many restaurants add 10-15% automatically for larger groups, so check the bill before adding more.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
Work out the tip on the whole bill, then divide it in the same proportion as each person’s order rather than equally.
How much should I tip for excellent service?
Many people go to the top of the usual range, or a little above it — 20-25% at a US restaurant instead of the standard 15-18%. There is no fixed rule; it is a personal way of recognising service beyond the norm.
