  • Reverse GST: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = 1,000 net. Subtracting 18% gives 967.60 — wrong.
  • India, within one state: CGST + SGST, half each. Between states: IGST in full.
  • US sales tax is quoted excluding tax; VAT/GST prices normally include it.

How do I calculate GST on an amount?

Multiply the net amount by the rate as a decimal. At 18%, ₹1,000 attracts ₹180 of GST, making the total ₹1,180.

How do I remove GST from a total that already includes it?

Divide the inclusive total by 1 plus the rate. ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 net, so the GST portion is ₹180. Never subtract the percentage directly.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

For sales inside one state, GST is split half to the centre (CGST) and half to the state (SGST). For interstate sales the full amount is charged as IGST. The customer pays the same total either way.
