Time zone offsets are not always whole hours — India, Iran and parts of Australia sit on a half-hour or 45-minute offset from neighbouring zones.
Daylight saving time shifts a zone's offset by an hour for part of the year, and different countries start and end it on different dates — this calculator uses the actual date you enter to get the right offset.
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) never observes daylight saving and is the reference every other zone is defined relative to.
Does this account for daylight saving time?
Yes — it uses your browser's own time zone database for the specific date you enter, so the correct offset applies whether or not daylight saving is in effect on that date.
What is the difference between GMT and UTC?
For almost all practical purposes they are the same. GMT is a time zone (used by the UK in winter); UTC is the precise timekeeping standard other zones are defined as an offset from. They agree to within a fraction of a second.
Why is a time zone offset sometimes not a whole hour?
A handful of zones — India (+5:30), Nepal (+5:45), Iran (+3:30) and parts of Australia (+9:30) among others — chose a half-hour or 45-minute offset from UTC rather than a whole hour, usually for historical or geographic reasons.
