How this works
Hours per year = hours/day × days/week × paid weeks/year
Hourly = annual ÷ hours per year
Monthly = annual ÷ 12
Assumption
Common value
Full-time hours per week
37.5 to 40
Working weeks per year
52 if paid leave, ~48 if unpaid
Standard full-time hours per year
2,080 at 40 × 52
Weeks per month
4.333, not 4
A month is 4.333 weeks on average. Dividing annual pay by 12 is right; multiplying weekly pay by 4 is not.
Contractors should use paid weeks, not 52 — unpaid leave, gaps and sick days cut the real hourly rate.
Everything here is gross. Tax, pension and insurance come off afterwards.

How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual figure by the hours you actually work in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, so 60,000 a year is about 28.85 an hour.
Why is monthly pay not four times weekly pay?
A month averages 4.333 weeks, not 4. Multiplying by 4 understates monthly pay by about 8%. Divide the annual figure by 12 instead.
What rate should a contractor charge to match a salary?
Use fewer paid weeks — 46 to 48 to allow for leave and gaps — and add for the benefits, pension and employer taxes an employer would otherwise cover.
